Story Rifat
Rifat lives in Narchi, a small village in Thana Daulatpur. He is 11 years old and has an intellectual disability. His father Md. Abul Hossen is a day laborer and his mother Rhena Begum a housewife.
In 2013 he was included in our project. As a two-year-old, he could not walk well, had drooling problems and was unable to speak. His family was very poor. They lived in a shack and had no assets. They had no money to treat him and there were no facilities near him.
Fortunately, that changed. Since Rifat visits a veranda school the drooling has diminished and Rifat walks and runs like any other child. He communicates with others and has made many friends and he likes to play with them. He understands simple questions and instructions. Rifat likes to be well dressed and he has learned all his activities of daily life.
Through our family development plan training, his parents learned to save money. As an income-generating project they received a sheep and training in caring for farm animals. We helped them get disability benefits from the government. All this helped the family to generate more income. They built a new house, bought a cow and earn 210tk a day selling the milk. Their flock of sheep grows and they sell the lams in the market.
Rifat and the family are very happy now. They got out of the poverty cycle. They generate enough income to live the life they want. They are grateful to Niketan for the service to their child and family.
