Project Awareness building
Our goal is not limited to support and educate the disabled children in our care. Niketan try to raise awareness among the wider public in Bangladesh and make the society more receptive of the needs of disabled people. We do this in our daily work, but we also organize special awareness and advocacy programs in the villages where we operate.
We share our 20 years of experience with partners at local and national level. Also, Niketan is increasingly invited to conferences, workshops and round tables with the government. In doing so, we share our experience, so that more organizations can benefit and use our knowledge in their work all over Bangladesh.
Information video
To give the local population and relevant government bodies a better picture of the possibilities of children and young people with severe disabilities, Niketan has created an information video in collaboration with the Bangladeshi partner organization DRRA. The video breaks down taboos and shows that children with complex disabilities can also develop into valued family members and play an active role in society. The video is used at meetings with local authorities and local community meetings organized by DRRA.
To further stimulate awareness and inclusion, we started the Stories for Inclusion project. It focuses on making children with disabilities visible and ordinary. Its main objectives are (1) to provide children and teachers with access to inclusive storybooks to increase awareness and understanding, and (2) to advocate for inclusive classrooms.
Thanks to our experience in providing sex education and reproductive health care training, we have contributed to strengthening more inclusive SRHR health care in Bangladesh. Vulnerable young people, people with disabilities and young people from minority groups can now also contact SRHR healthcare with their questions. This has improved the quality of SRHR services, both within local government and in villages and schools.
