Project Care and Development
The Care and development group consists of 44 children with severe mental and often multiple disabilities, whether physical, behavioral, or a combination of them. The group consists of children who are all different in terms of age, level of development, skill level and associated problems.
Niketan offers those children an appropriate range of activities, taking into account the development and experience levels of each child. Based on their individual support plan the individual goals and future opportunities are monitored. The focus is on gaining and improving skills: cognitive, ADL and social and emotional skills.
Niketan provides information, gives training to parents and healthcare professionals, improves the quality of care and ensures that the right development methodologies are applied.
In 2019 the teachers received training in the TEACHH model. TEACCH is an evidence-based academic program that is based on the idea that autistic individuals are visual learners. So teachers must correspondingly adapt their teaching style and intervention strategies.
Providing more structure and rewarding positive behavior has resulted in children showing less difficult behavior. For the children with a very serious disability, the focus has been on providing ‘experience ‘ activities aimed at body-bound experiences such as feeling, smelling, tasting, looking and hearing.
